Photo Shoot - Madkatz Boxing

Some of the fighters from the Madkatz Boxing here in Kelowna were good enough to let me do some experimenting during one of their restricted training sessions. The results were absolutely worth the precautions and working with these athletes who were very accommodating of working with a non-boxer. The amenability of everyone from this club was exceptional, particularly their patience and understanding in helping me pose shots and play around with lighting combinations.

I wish this club and everyone that’s a member the best of luck as they continue to keep themselves fighting fit for when it’s safe to return to the ring! More information on this club is available here.

Technical Notes

This shoot was done with a Nikon D500, and two Godox AD200 Pro strobes, one with a strip-box, and the other using a combination of a bare-bulb head and reflector dish, or a fresnel flash-head with barn doors and a combination of red and blue gels.

The two strobes were set up in an isoceles triangle, with the subject(s) at the peak of the triangle, and each strobe about eight feet away from the subject. This allowed the shadows on the face and upper body to be accentuated while giving a harsher rim light to the subjects. It also enabled me to give a partial fill to some of the shadows using a gel and give a semi-monochromatic feel to the images.
